This prompted the leader of the Chinese Nationalist Government, Chiang Kai-Shek (), to dispatch Chinas most elite division, the 5th Corps, which included a certain assistant battalion commander by the name of Lih Chien, in order to rout Japanese forces before they could launch an offensive against the capital. Not only was the 5th Corp composed of veterans from numerous battles, it was the only Chinese unit with tanks and armored vehicles.
